Dean Tavoularis, a Remembrance
“My dear friend and collaborator Dean Tavoularis has passed, a profound loss. I would be unable to list the many ways he benefited my work and my personal life. He was a great artist, a great friend, a great production designer and a great man.” — Francis Ford Coppola
Join us on May 27th, 2026, on Opening Night of the 20th edition of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival; where we are honored to present a remembrance of one of our greatest and most respected artists in the seventh art, Dean Tavoularis.
The remembrance will precede the Opening Night film screening, and it is included in the Opening Night ticket price.
“Alexandre is in my opinion one of the best, if not the best composer alive. He is a guy who knows exactly why he is doing something and exactly how to achieve an emotion and exactly how to make the music eloquent.” — Guillermo del Toro
The cinematic scores of multi-award-winning Composer Alexandre Desplat are all deeply connected to the core of the story. From the balalaika in Wes Anderson’s THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL to the bandoneon in Guillermo del Toro’s THE SHAPE OF WATER – both Oscar wins for the maestro – his music has always served as a delicate storytelling device that never overpowered the visuals.
Join us on May 31, Closing Night of the 20th edition of Los Angeles Greek Film Festival; when we are honored to present our 2026 Tribute and Honorary Orpheus Award to an artist whose genre-bending work has inspired and influenced generations of storytellers, Composer Alexandre Desplat.
In June 2007, filmmakers Ersi Danou and Angeliki Giannakopoulos, and joined by documentary filmmaker Avra Georgiou, introduced the first Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF) to a community that was ready and willing to connect with Greek creators from Greece, Cyprus and around the world. For the first time ever, Los Angeles was getting long-term Greek cultural representation with the establishment of an annual event; and, for the first time, Greek filmmakers would have the opportunity to repeatedly experience the center of American and global entertainment, meet local professionals, absorb diverse perspectives, develop their projects, and get to know transatlantic fellow creatives.
